Hipcooks Catch of the Day
So, you know the old adage "Give the man a fish, and he'll eat for a day.  Teach him how to fish and he'll eat forever".  Sound fishy to you?  Let me explain - rather than going out to dinner with your friend or sweetie, consider an evening at Hipcooks. For what you'd spend at a restaurant, you'll enjoy a delicious meal with fun new people.  But even better, you'll learn the tricks of the trade.  The gift that keeps on giving, kapish?  You lucky thing!  Carpool with your mates, save gas and you get bonus points.  Lots of classes to choose from, and lots of wonderful fish-y themes for summer!  Check out the Healthy Fresh and Zingy series for LOTS of knife skills and wonderful seared ahi tuna, scallops skewered on rosemary sticks, or wild salmon stuffed with oyster mushrooms.  A Midsummer Night's Dream is back, with ceviche and romantic summertime fare.  Pack it Up is all you need to have a splendid summer picnic at the Hollywood Bowl or Cemetery screening.  Check it!  All new classes have been posted at

New!  Day Classes at Hipcooks West
We're trying it again - Hipcooks West will be offering a day class in the next month - we hope you can join us!  I have had requests for day classes in the past, we would love to offer this with frequency.

New!  Cake making-and decorating classes
Have your cake, decorate it, and eat it, too!
This two-class series offers all you need to know to create a truly splendid occasion cake.  Now with summer upon us, what a lovely thing!  Class 1: Learn the basics of cake assembly and decoration.  In this class you'll all have your own cake to layer and frost with butter cream. You'll also learn how to make a ganache to pour over a cake.  Lovely, sexy, delicious.
Class 2:  Cake decorating.  Now that you've got the cake-basics down, learn to decorate.  How to create a multitude of flowers, basketweave and piping techniques to make a cake that will stop them in their tracks.
These series comes with a recipe book and decorating kits, as well as a take-home cake to enjoy.  These classes have a max of 12 people in each class, so sign up soon!

Recipe of the Month and bonus photo
I dunno about y'all, but I'm thinking it is Julep weather!

Kentucky Derby Mint Julep

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • Sprigs of fresh mint
  • Crushed ice
  • Whiskey

Make a mint simple syrup by boiling sugar, water and mint together for five minutes. Strain, cool and place in a covered container with some sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of whiskey. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.  How about a variation using fresh basil, or lemon verbena?

Perfect when served with crawfish.

Eat well, be well.
